One Chart for Boys and Girls
Matalan uses identical measurements for boys and girls across their entire kids’ range — the same chest measurements for tops, the same waist and hip measurements for bottoms, at every size from baby through to 15Y. This means there is no boys’ chart and girls’ chart to cross-reference: the measurements are the same regardless of which section you shop.

How to Find the Right Size
Matalan recommends starting with your child’s height. Find the label whose height range matches your child and use that as your starting size.
For children at the boundary between two sizes, the weight column helps for baby sizes. For older children, measuring chest for tops or waist and hip for bottoms against the published measurements gives a more accurate result than height alone — particularly as children get older and their proportions vary more. Matalan publishes no chest, waist or hip for the baby and toddler range (up to and including 24-36M), so height and weight are the only guides there. A Note on Baby Size Labels
Matalan’s baby range uses UK-specific size names that differ from both EU height-based sizing and US age labels.
- Prem Baby (41–43cm, 1.4–1.8kg) is designed for premature babies — not all brands include this size, and it fills a genuine gap for parents of early arrivals.
- First Size covers 43–50cm and up to 3.2kg. This is broadly equivalent to Newborn in US sizing and is what most UK brands use as the starting size for full-term newborns.
- Up to 1M follows at 50–56cm. The name refers to age — up to approximately one month — rather than a measurement.
From 0-3M onward the labels follow standard UK convention and are broadly comparable to other UK high street brands including Next, George and Primark.

Matalan’s shoe chart uses EU sizing as the primary label, with US and UK conversions and foot length in centimetres for each size. To measure your child’s foot, place their heel against a wall with the foot flat and measure to the tip of the longest toe.

How Matalan Compares to Other UK Brands
Matalan uses age-based labels, as do most UK high street brands. The height ranges are broadly consistent with Next, George at Asda and Primark, which means if your child wears an 8Y at one of those brands they will typically wear an 8Y at Matalan.
The main difference to be aware of is with European brands like H&M and Zara, which size by height in centimetres rather than age. A child who wears H&M 128 is in the height range for Matalan 8Y (122–128cm) — the systems are compatible but the labels look completely different.
