Kids' number sizes compared: why size 6 is not the same height at every brand

Short answer

The same number size covers different heights at different brands.

From size 4 to size 12, the gap between the tallest-cut and shortest-cut brand is about 10 cm. At size 14 it is 15 cm.

Each step up the number ladder adds about 7 cm.

4T is not the same as 4: across the brands that publish both, size 4 is a median 2.1 cm taller.

Number sizes in cm: the lookup table

Number sizes are the US-style labels 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12 and 14. The table uses the published height ranges of 20 brands, boys and girls kept separate, as of October 2026.

Size 6 across 18 brands

At size 6 the shortest-cut range is H&M "116 (6)" at 110-116 cm. The tallest is Amazon Essentials at about 122-127 cm, allowing for its whole-inch notation; the table shows the stored figure. The median bracket midpoint is 117.6 cm, and the most common bracket, 112-118 cm, is shared by only 3 of 18 brands.

Each step up the ladder adds about 7 cm: the median step is 7.3 cm from size 4 to 5, 7.1 cm from 5 to 6, 7.4 cm from 6 to 7 and 7.1 cm from 7 to 8. From size 8 the numbers skip (8, 10, 12, 14), so a step of about 7 cm covers two years, or about 3.5 cm per year.

Older number sizes grow slowly: brand ladders add about 3 to 4 cm a year from size 10 to 14, against about 5 to 7 cm for the typical child (CDC).

4T is not 4

Size 4 is a median 2.1 cm taller than 4T across the 8 brands that publish both. For 5T against 5 the figure is 2.5 cm across 5 brands. The difference ranges from 0 cm (Jumping Beans, Nike Kids, Under Armour, Wonder Nation) to 8 cm (Amazon Essentials).

Number size versus age label

Number sizes at 6 and 8 are cut for taller children than the age label with the same number. By 12 and 14 they are cut for shorter children.

In practice, number size 8 (most often 131-136 cm) is closest to the UK and European "8-9 years" label (128-134 cm). Number size 14 (147-151 cm) is closest to "12 years" (146-152 cm), well below "14 years" (158-164 cm).

This comparison treats number size N as an age of N years. The cm comparisons elsewhere on this page do not depend on that assumption.

What H&M "116 (6)" means

H&M prints a height in cm with a number size in brackets. In "116 (6)", the 116 is the top of its height range: H&M "116 (6)" covers 110-116 cm, the shortest-cut size 6 of the 18 brands compared.

Boys and girls

26 of 153 brand-size pairs differ by more than 2 cm between the boys and girls charts. Lands' End girls sizes are 8-10 cm taller at sizes 10-12. Cat & Jack boys sizes look shifted one size against Cat & Jack girls: boys 6 is 119.4-125.7 cm, girls 6 is 114.3-119.4 cm.

What to do

Measure your child's height, without shoes, and compare it with the brand's own height range for the size. Do not assume a size 6 at one brand is a size 6 at another, and do not buy by the number alone.

The size finder matches a height to each brand's chart. For the wider picture, see the kids clothing size chart guide.

Which age label is closest to number size 8?

Methods and sources

Published brand size charts only: 20 brands, sizes 4 to 14, 327 chart rows, boys and girls kept separate. Brands that publish in inches are converted at 2.54 cm per inch.

Note: some brands round their ranges to whole inches, which leaves small gaps between sizes in the chart. Amazon Essentials' chart lists overlapping ranges for sizes 7 and 8. Some brands publish two ladders in one chart (Carter's, Next, Primary); these are read as published.

Height only. This is not a fit study: chest, waist, hips, rise, stretch and cut are not compared. Plus, husky, slim and extended fits are excluded. Brands change charts; check the brand's own chart before buying.
