How to Use Outgrow

Never buy the wrong size again. Here's how to get the most out of Outgrow, whether you're a new parent, managing multiple kids, or trying to save money on children's clothing.

👶 New Parents: Start Here

Just had a baby? Welcome! Outgrow helps you track your child's sizes across 38+ brands so you never buy clothes that don't fit.

Step 1: Create Your Baby's Profile

When you first open Outgrow, you'll go through a quick onboarding flow to set up your first child:

  1. Enter your child's name (or nickname!)
  2. Add their birthday - this helps predict growth
  3. Measure height and weight - use your pediatrician's latest measurements

Screenshot: Onboarding screen showing child profile creation

Image to be added

💡
Pro Tip: Don't have exact measurements? That's okay! You can update them after your next pediatrician visit. The app works with approximate measurements too.

Step 2: Add Your First Clothing Item

Now let's add something from your baby's wardrobe:

  1. Tap "Add Item" from the home screen
  2. Take two photos:
    • Item photo: Lay the clothing flat and photograph it (this becomes your thumbnail)
    • Tag photo: Close-up of the size tag
  3. Outgrow automatically detects:
    • Brand (Gap, Carter's, H&M, etc.)
    • Size (6M, 12M, 2T, etc.)
    • Type (or you'll select it in the next step)

Screenshot: Add item screen with camera interface showing item laid flat

Image to be added

💡
Pro Tip: For privacy, we recommend photographing items laid flat rather than worn. Use good lighting when photographing tags - it helps Outgrow detect the brand and size accurately.

Step 3: Select Clothing Type

After taking photos, you'll choose what type of clothing this is:

  1. Select category:
    • Tops (t-shirts, sweaters, jackets)
    • Bottoms (pants, shorts, skirts)
    • Shoes (sneakers, boots, sandals)
  2. Confirm or edit the auto-detected brand and size
  3. Save to wardrobe

Screenshot: Clothing type selection screen with three category options

Image to be added

💡
Pro Tip: Outgrow uses clothing type to give more accurate fit predictions - tops may fit differently than bottoms as your child grows!

Step 4: Get Your First Size Recommendation

Want to buy something new? Here's how to know what size to get:

  1. Tap "Size Finder" in the bottom menu
  2. Select the brand you're shopping from (Gap, Zara, H&M, etc.)
  3. Choose the clothing type (top, bottom, full outfit)
  4. See your recommendation:
    • Current size that fits now
    • How long it will fit (longevity prediction)
    • Next size up with timing

Screenshot: Size recommendation screen showing multiple brand options

Image to be added

Example Result:
Current Size: 6M Fits until: March 2026 (2 months) Next Size: 9M Buy next size: February 2026
💡
Pro Tip: Different brands size differently! Gap's 6M might be bigger than Carter's 6M. Outgrow accounts for this so you always get the right fit.

Step 5: Understand Longevity Predictions

Outgrow tells you how long each item will fit based on:

  • Your child's current measurements
  • Their growth velocity
  • Industry standard size ranges per brand

Screenshot: Wardrobe view showing items with longevity badges like 'Fits 3 more months'

Image to be added

What the colors mean:

  • 🟢Green (4+ months): Still have plenty of time
  • 🟡Yellow (2-3 months): Start thinking about next size
  • 🟠Orange (1 month): Buy next size soon
  • Black (outgrown): Time to retire or pass down

Why This Matters for New Parents

Before Outgrow:

  • • Buy 12M clothes for 8-month-old
  • • They outgrow before wearing it
  • • Waste $600/year on wrong sizes

With Outgrow:

  • • Know exact size across all brands
  • • Buy at the right time
  • • Clothes get maximum wear

👧👦 Multiple Kids? Manage Siblings

Have more than one child? Outgrow makes hand-me-downs easier by letting you pass items between siblings' wardrobes.

Adding Multiple Children

Screenshot: Family view showing multiple child profiles

Image to be added

  1. Tap the profile icon at top left
  2. Select "Add Child"
  3. Create profile for your second (or third, or fourth!) child
  4. Switch between kids by tapping their profile
💡
Pro Tip: Each child has their own wardrobe, size recommendations, and growth tracking!

Passing Items Between Siblings

When an item no longer fits your older child, you can easily pass it to a younger sibling:

  1. Item becomes outgrown in older child's wardrobe (shows black indicator)
  2. Outgrow prompts: "Pass this to [sibling name]?"
  3. Tap "Hand Down" to confirm
  4. Item moves to younger sibling's wardrobe
  5. Outgrow starts tracking when it will fit the younger child

Screenshot: Hand-me-down prompt showing 'Pass Emma's jacket to Oiva?'

Image to be added

Example:
👧 Emma's 4T Jacket (outgrown) ↓ Hand down? 👦 Oiva's Wardrobe Status: Will fit in 6 months (October 2026)

Why This Works

Traditional hand-me-down problems:

  • • Forget what clothes you saved
  • • Don't know when younger child will fit them
  • • Miss the perfect timing

With Outgrow:

  • • All hand-me-downs tracked in younger child's wardrobe
  • • See exactly when each item will fit
  • • Get reminders to check stored items

Organizing Hand-Me-Downs

Best practices:

  1. Add storage notes when handing down:
    • "Blue bin in garage"
    • "Under Oiva's bed"
    • "Grandma's house"
  2. Check wardrobe seasonally:
    • Spring: Check what fits now
    • Fall: Prepare for winter items
  3. Update measurements regularly:
    • After doctor visits
    • During growth spurts
    • Every 3 months for babies
    • Every 6 months for toddlers+

Screenshot: Wardrobe showing hand-me-down items with storage notes

💡
Pro Tip: When your younger child grows, update their measurements in the app so Outgrow can accurately predict when hand-me-downs will fit!

Real Family Example

With Outgrow:

  • • Track hand-me-downs in each child's wardrobe
  • • Know exactly when to pull items from storage
  • • Save money by maximizing use
  • • Every item gets worn by multiple kids

🔔 Never Miss the Right Moment

The most powerful Outgrow feature: Smart alerts that tell you exactly when to act.

Types of Alerts You Can Set

Screenshot: Alert settings screen showing different alert types

Image to be added

1. Seasonal Alerts ❄️☀️

What it does: Reminds you 3 months before a season to check if your child needs new clothes.

When to use:

  • "Does my child need a new winter coat?"
  • "Will summer clothes from last year still fit?"
  • "Time to check if rain boots still fit"
Example:
Alert: September 1 "Winter is coming! Check if Emma needs: - Winter coat (current 4T will be too small) - Snow pants (current pair still fits!) - Winter boots (need size 10, currently size 9)"

Setup:

  1. Tap Settings → Alerts
  2. Enable Seasonal Reminders
  3. Choose timing: 3 months or 6 weeks before season

2. Item-Specific Alerts 👕

What it does: Warns you when specific items are about to be outgrown.

When to use:

  • Expensive items (winter coats, nice shoes)
  • Special occasion outfits
  • Items you want to photograph before outgrowing
Example:
Alert: February 15 "Emma's winter coat fits 2 more weeks. Next size: 5T Recommended brands on sale: Gap Kids, Old Navy"

Setup:

  1. Open any item in wardrobe
  2. Tap bell icon
  3. Choose "Alert when outgrowing"
  4. Set timing: 1 month, 2 weeks, or custom

3. Shopping Alerts 🛍️

What it does: Notifies when it's the optimal time to buy the next size.

When to use:

  • Watching for sales
  • Building budget-friendly wardrobe
Example:
Alert: March 1 "Time to buy 5T clothes for Emma! Current 4T fits until May. Buy now to catch spring sales."

Setup:

  1. Settings → Shopping Alerts
  2. Set lead time: How far in advance you want to shop (4-8 weeks recommended)
  3. Choose alert frequency: Weekly or when on sale

4. Custom Alerts 🎯

What it does: Create your own alerts for unique needs.

  • Special events (photoshoots, weddings)

Custom Alert: June 1 "Check if Emma's swimsuit still fits. Last year's size: 4T Predicted current size: 5T Days until summer vacation: 45"

Alert Timing Strategies

Conservative (6-8 weeks)Bargain hunters, online shoppersCatch sales, compare pricesMore planning needed
Standard (4-6 weeks)Most familiesBalance of planning and flexibilityNone - the sweet spot
Last Minute (2-3 weeks)Quick shoppers, local storesVery accurate predictionsMiss sales, limited selection

Managing Alert Overload

Getting too many alerts? Here's how to optimize:

  1. Consolidate similar items: Get one alert for "all spring tops" instead of per-item alerts
  2. Adjust timing: Increase lead time so you get fewer but earlier alerts
  3. Seasonal only: Turn off item-specific alerts, keep seasonal reminders
  4. Batch alerts: Get weekly digest instead of real-time notifications
💡
Pro Tip: Start with seasonal alerts only, then add others as needed.

With Outgrow:

  1. 1. See item → check size in app
  2. 2. Know immediately if it fits now or when
  3. 3. Buy with confidence
  4. 4. Maximize value of every purchase

Check Outgrow: Current size: 4T. Will fit 5T: May 2026. Summer starts: June 2026

Decision: Perfect timing! Buy it. ✅

See: H&M winter coat, size 6, $15

Check Outgrow: Will fit size 6: December 2026. Next winter: December 2026

Decision: Great find! Buy it. ✅

See: Old Navy shorts, size 8, $4

Check Outgrow: Will fit size 8: July 2027. Too far ahead - might get damaged in storage

Decision: Skip it. ❌

Sizing Quirks: What to Know

Secondhand shopping tip: Different brands size very differently. Outgrow accounts for this!

Examples of size differences (same age child):

  • Gap 4T: Fits child 98-104cm
  • Carter's 4T: Fits child 96-102cm
  • H&M 4T: Fits child 100-106cm

Without Outgrow: You'd need to memorize every brand's sizing
With Outgrow: App tells you exactly which brands fit right now

Facebook Marketplace & Online Secondhand

Shopping online? Here's your checklist:

  1. See listing (e.g., "5T summer clothes lot")
  2. Check each brand in Outgrow:
    • Old Navy 5T: ✅ Fits now
    • Carter's 5T: ✅ Fits now
    • Cat & Jack 5T: ⚠️ Runs small, check measurements
  3. Ask seller for measurements on items that "run small"
  4. Compare to Outgrow recommendations
  5. Buy with confidence
💡
Pro Tip: In messages to sellers, ask "What's the length from shoulder to hem?" and compare to Outgrow's measurements.

Calculating Secondhand ROI

🎁 Giving Gifts? Perfect Sizing

Buying clothes as gifts? Nothing worse than a gift that doesn't fit. Here's how to nail it every time.

For Grandparents & Family

The Problem:

  • • Grandma wants to buy clothes for grandchild's birthday
  • • Guesses size based on age
  • • Gets it wrong - child already bigger
  • • Gift goes unworn

The Outgrow Solution:

Option 1: Share Your Child's Size Guide
  1. Open your child's profile
  2. Tap "Share" icon
  3. Generate shareable link: outgrow.app/share/emma-sizes
  4. Text to grandparents
They see:
Emma's Current Sizes (Updated Feb 2026) - Gap: 5T (fits until May) - Carter's: 5 (fits until June) - H&M: 110 (fits until May) - Shoes: Size 10 - Next sizes: Buy 6/6T in March

Screenshot: Shareable size guide view

Image to be added

Option 2: Shopping List

Create a shared shopping list of needed items:

  1. Profile → Shopping List
  2. Add upcoming needs:
    • "5T winter coat needed in October"
    • "Size 10 rain boots needed in March"
    • "6 summer dresses needed in May"
  3. Add notes about preferences (colors, styles)
  4. Share link with family
  5. They can check off items as purchased

Screenshot: Shopping list interface showing needed items with notes

Image to be added

💡
Pro Tip: Update this before holidays and birthdays so family always knows what your child needs and what size to buy!

Gift-Giving Timing Strategy

The #1 Gift-Giving Mistake: Buying for "now" instead of "when they'll actually wear it"

❌ Wrong:

  • • Buy winter coat in December for child's January birthday
  • • Child needs size 5 now
  • • You buy size 5
  • Problem: By next winter (when they need it), child is size 6

✅ Right:

  • • Buy winter coat in December for next winter
  • • Child is size 5 now
  • • You buy size 6
  • Result: Child will be size 6 next winter - perfect! 🎉

Special Occasion Sizing

Weddings, photos, holidays:

  1. Know the date: June 15, 2026
  2. Count months from now: 4 months away
  3. Check Outgrow prediction: Child will be 5T by then
  4. Buy 5T even though child is currently 4T
  5. Order 2-3 weeks early to allow for alterations if needed

Screenshot: Event planning feature showing size at future date

The $60 Gift That Fits

Average expensive gift that doesn't fit: $60 wasted
With Outgrow: $60 gift that gets 30+ wears = $2 per wear

Family savings when everyone uses Outgrow sizing:

  • • 4 grandparents
  • • 2 aunts/uncles
  • • = 6 people buying wrong sizes
  • • = $360/year in unworn gifts

With Outgrow: $0 wasted, everything fits! 🎁
