Marks & Spencer is one of Britain's most trusted children's clothing brands — and according to our verified cross-brand analysis, it produces the single most dramatic sizing finding of any UK kids brand. M&S boys clothing runs the most generous waist of any UK brand we measured across 30+ UK and European labels. M&S girls, however, tells a completely different story.

This guide covers M&S kids sizing in full, verified from M&S's official size charts, with the simulation findings explained and a cross-brand comparison against H&M, Next, Zara, Tu and Tesco F&F.

The short answer: M&S boys runs dramatically generous — the most generous waist of any UK brand at most heights, approximately 7–8cm above H&M and Next at 112cm. M&S girls runs average to slightly slim in the older sizes. If you've ever found M&S boys trousers noticeably baggy, you now know why. Girls sizing is a different product entirely. See our cross-brand sizing research for the full methodology.

Does M&S Run Big or Small?

We compared M&S measurements against a Monte Carlo simulation of 1,000 children across four age bands, using proportional interpolation within each size bracket to eliminate bracket position bias. The full method is documented in Does Kids Clothing Run Big or Small?.

The findings for M&S boys are the most pronounced of any brand in our entire database. M&S boys chest deviates +5.60cm (+3.79 standard deviations) above the cross-brand mean — the single largest generous finding across all 54 brand/category combinations measured. M&S boys waist deviates +5.54cm (+3.03 standard deviations) above the mean — again the largest generous finding of all 69 brand/category combinations for waist.

Crucially, this finding is consistent across every age group — toddler, kids and older kids all show the same +5cm deviation. This is not a quirk of one bracket or one size — M&S boys is systematically and deliberately cut with significantly more room than equivalent UK brands throughout the entire size range.

M&S girls is a completely separate story. Girls runs essentially average through the kids range and moves toward slim in the older sizes — waist deviating -3.64cm in the older kids band. A boy and a girl at the same height, buying the same M&S age label, will have fundamentally different fit experiences.

Cross-Brand Comparison at 112cm

Our reference child is 112cm tall with a 53.5cm waist and 58.5cm hip. Here is how M&S compares to other major UK brands for boys bottoms at this height:

Boys standard bottoms waist comparison at 112cm — verified measurements from official brand size charts

BrandSize labelWaist (cm)vs reference child
M&S5-6 Years61–62+7.5–8.5cm — most generous
Tu (Sainsbury's)5-6 Years55+1.5cm
Next555+1.5cm
H&M11654+0.5cm
Zara Kids111-11655+1.5cm
Tesco F&F5-6Y55+1.5cm

The gap between M&S and every other UK brand at this height is striking. At 112cm, M&S boys standard waist of 61–62cm is 6–8cm above the group average of 54–55cm. For context, 6cm is roughly the difference between two adjacent standard sizes at this height range. A child who fits H&M or Next snugly in age 5-6 will find M&S 5-6 Years noticeably generous through the waist and seat.

M&S boys is also one of the most consistent brands in our simulation — a coefficient of variation of 9.12% means the generous cut is applied evenly throughout the size range, not concentrated at specific sizes. Parents who find M&S generous at age 5 will find it equally generous at age 10.

This is the widest standard-to-slim gap of any UK brand we've measured. A child with a 53–55cm waist at 112cm — which would be average across most UK brands — falls squarely between M&S standard and M&S Slim.

M&S offers the most comprehensive premature baby sizing of any major UK retailer — seven sizes from 1.4kg through to standard newborn. Most retailers start at newborn or 0-3 months. M&S starts at 1.4kg, covering babies born significantly early. For parents of premature babies this makes M&S the most practical UK high street option for the earliest weeks.

M&S Kids Shoe Size Chart

M&S uses UK sizing with an S (small) and L (large) suffix system. S sizes cover smaller children's feet, L sizes cover larger children and into junior sizes. The transition from S to L occurs at approximately UK 13 / EU 32 / 19.2cm foot length.

How to Measure Your Child for M&S

  • Height — stand against a flat wall without shoes, feet together. Mark and measure from floor to top of head.
  • Chest — measure around the fullest part of the chest, tape horizontal and snug. Arms relaxed at sides. More important for girls tops where M&S chest measurements are notably different from boys.
  • Waist — measure at the natural waist, just above the belly button, snug but comfortable. For boys bottoms this is the critical measurement given M&S's generous standard — if your son's waist is more than 5cm below the standard waist for his height, M&S Slim is worth considering.
  • Hip — measure around the fullest part of the hips. Published for girls bottoms but not boys.
  • Inseam — measure from the crotch seam to the ankle bone standing. M&S publishes inseam data for all bottoms sizes which makes trouser length verification easier when buying online.
  • Foot length — mark heel and longest toe on paper, measure the distance standing. Use the larger foot. M&S half sizes throughout the shoe range mean you can find a more precise fit than at most UK retailers.

M&S Kids Sizing — Key Findings

  • M&S boys runs the most generous waist of any UK brand — +5.54cm above the cross-brand mean, the largest generous finding in our entire simulation of 30+ brands. The generous cut is consistent across every age group from toddler through older kids.
  • M&S girls is a different product entirely — girls runs average through the kids range and moves toward slim in the older sizes. A boy and girl at the same height in M&S will have fundamentally different fit experiences.
  • Widest standard-to-Slim gap of any UK brand — at 110–116cm, boys standard waist is 61–62cm and Slim is 51–52cm. A 10cm spread means children with average waist measurements (53–55cm at this height) fall between the two fits.
  • Best premature baby sizing on the UK high street — seven premature sizes from 1.4kg, covering significantly earlier births than any comparable UK retailer.
  • Inseam published for all bottoms — useful when buying trousers online. M&S includes inseam data from toddler through 15-16 Years.
  • S/L shoe suffix system — M&S shoes use S (small) and L (large) suffixes rather than Jnr or Y. Transition from S to L occurs at UK 13 / EU 32 / 19.2cm foot length. Half sizes available throughout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does M&S kids run big or small?

It depends entirely on whether you're buying for a boy or a girl. M&S boys clothing runs the most generous waist of any UK brand — approximately 7–8cm above H&M, Next and Zara at 112cm. M&S girls runs average through most of the size range and trends slightly slim in the older sizes. The same age label fits very differently depending on gender.

Why do M&S boys trousers always seem baggy?

Because they are — by design and by a significant margin. Our simulation found M&S boys waist deviates +5.54cm above the cross-brand mean, the largest generous finding of any brand we measured. M&S boys trousers are cut with substantially more room than equivalent sizes at H&M, Next, Zara or Tu. If your son has an average or slim build, M&S Slim may be worth trying.

What is M&S Slim fit?

M&S Slim is a narrower cut available for boys bottoms from 2-3 Years through 15-16 Years. At 5-6 Years, Slim waist is 51–52cm versus standard 61–62cm — a 10cm difference. Given how generous the M&S standard is, Slim at M&S is closer to what other brands call their standard fit. Children with average waist measurements at M&S height brackets may find Slim a more accurate fit than standard.

How does M&S sizing compare to Next?

For boys bottoms, M&S runs approximately 6–7cm more generous in the waist than Next at most heights. At 112cm, M&S boys standard waist is 61–62cm versus Next boys standard of 55cm. For girls the difference is much smaller — M&S girls and Next girls are within 1–2cm of each other at most heights, both sitting close to the UK average.

Does M&S have premature baby clothes?

Yes — M&S offers seven premature baby sizes starting from 1.4kg, which is significantly more comprehensive than most UK retailers. Sizes cover 1.4kg, 1.8kg, Early Baby (43–45cm), Tiny Baby (45–48cm), Newborn (48–50cm), 1 Month and 1-3 Months. This range makes M&S the most practical high street option for parents of premature babies.
